Karen M. Ricks is a Christian wife, Worldschooling mom, and a nomadic chef. Teaching for 25 years, she has been a Montessorian since her own preschool days. She holds Montessori teaching certifications for guiding children from infancy through elementary. She has cooked professionally, in restaurants, commercial kitchens, and private homes on four different continents over the last decade.

After 10 years of teaching in central Japan, where Karen founded and operated her own international Montessori school, she sold it all to begin a nomadic life of full-time travel with her family. Karen spreads her message of embracing a Slow Food Lifestyle, a lifelong love of learning, and education for peace by teaching people of all ages how to cook for themselves and why they need to share that gift with those they love. You can learn more about her, her family’s edible exploits, and the lessons they are learning on their Culinary Worldschooling Adventures as they gallivant around the globe over at Our Kitchen Classroom dot com.

First and foremost, I am a mom. I have three rambunctious little boys who love spending every single second that they can out in nature.

My story begins as a homeschooled child. My father was in the military, so my parents began homeschooling me in third grade out of necessity at first, but eventually because of a disappointment in the complete lack of engaging material found in the classrooms (keep in mind this was over 20 years ago!) Sadly, not much has changed for the better. My homeschool days were filled with family activities, independent learning, field trips, and worldwide adventures. I made it into my first choice for college with multiple scholarships. I received my Bachelors in Elementary Education, followed by a Masters of Education as a certified Reading Specialist, followed by a second Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. After three years of teaching in both rural and urban elementary schools, I decided to leave the profession after having my oldest son. When my son turned two, and began to show interest in learning, I found that I naturally was providing exciting learning opportunities for him, and had many mothers begin asking me to share my experiences with them.

And so, here we are!
